Travis Barker’s musical genes run in the family, with his son, Landon Barker, releasing his debut single “Friends With Your Ex” last week. Along with the song, Landon also shared a music video for the track, which stars his real-life girlfriend Charli D’Amelio.

The pop-punk track is all about Landon falling for his friend’s girlfriend, and fans have already begun speculating whether it was inspired by actual events.

“I was friends with your ex / You were with him when we met,” he sings in the chorus. “Guess he hasn’t found out yet / But I know he’s gonna kill me when he sees me with you.”

The video sees Landon and his band performing in a garage as D’Amelio looks on, the performance interspersed with clips of the TikTok star and Landon together before they end up at a party with their group of friends and Landon gets into a fight.

In an interview with Variety, Landon called the song, which he wrote with Nick Long, “a messed up little love story.” “I originally got the idea to write the song just based on life and what I was going through,” he said, seeming to allude to rumors by adding, “I mean, take it how you want it, you know?”

Signed With Travis Barker’s Elektra Imprint DTA Records

Landon shared that he had been wanting to pursue music since he was young after watching his famous dad.

“I’ve been wanting to do this since I was a kid, since I was probably 8 or 10 years old,” Barker, now 19, tells Variety. “Just watching my dad perform, I’ve always been inspired and wanted to be up on stage and move people with music of my own.”

He shared that he signed with DTA because “Who doesn’t want to work with their family?,” but he’s aware of the criticism that might come with his choice.

“I mean, if the song’s incredible everyone’s going to be like, ‘It’s because he got help from his dad.’ If the song’s horrible, everybody’s going to be like, ‘He’s not as good as his dad,’” the 19-year-old said. “So I just take the internet with a grain of salt, try not to look too far into the comments and look for the people who are really moved by my music and interested in it, and want to see what I can do for myself, as myself.”

His New Music Will Lean More Toward Pop

The fast-rising 19-year-old star has a few more songs on the way, but they might not all have a pop-punk sound.

“It’s funny, even going into sessions when I’m not trying to make a pop-punk song, still the melodies end up being kind of pop-punky,” Landon mused. “I think it’s a good way to get my name out right away and show people who I am as an artist. And then I plan to go more into the pop direction, but I wanted to show everyone that I can do this first, you know?”

On October 9, Landon will celebrate his 20th birthday with a performance at El Rey in Los Angeles.

“I feel so comfortable and free and happy,” he said of being on stage. “It’s like a serotonin rush that only some people are ever going to get to feel.”
