One year after her passing, Reba McEntire is honoring her late mother, Jacqueline, with an emotion-filled video for a song called “You Never Gave Up On Me.”
The country superstar’s mother passed away on March 14, 2020, following a lengthy battle with cancer. “Our Mother, Jacqueline McEntire, made that wonderful cross over into Heaven today,” McEntire shared at the time of her mom’s passing, alongside a portrait of her mom. “She had a wonderful, full, healthy life and was absolutely ready to go. Cancer might think it won the battle, but we’re giving God all the credit on selecting the time for her to go home to Him. She was ready to see our Daddy, her mama, and daddy, and all her family and friends.”
On March 14, 2021, McEntire shared a video for the Stronger Than The Truth track, that included dozens of photos of McEntire and her late mother throughout her entire childhood, career and their final days together. The video also featured photos of Reba’s father, Clark, who passed away in 2014.
“Mama went to heaven. I know she’s still not giving up on me. Thank you Mama,” McEntire captioned her social media post on Monday (Mar. 15).
“First time me and mama came to Nashville, she told me, she said ‘Reba, I couldn’t do this, so I’m living my life and my dreams through you.” McEntire tearfully said in a throwback 1984 CMA Awards clip, that opens the video. “This is for me and mama and we thank you.”
McEntire previously shared that “You Never Gave Up On Me” was a “great song” for Mama, as she recalls “who besides God has never given up on me? Mama.” Additionally, the country superstar had her siblings play the track for her late mom one Christmas Eve and McEntire’s mom listened to the track and cried as she was “very appreciative” and “love it.”
“You Never Gave Up on Me” was co-written by Billy Aerts and Burton Collins. The song is the last track on McEntire’s 2019 album, Stronger Than the Truth.
