Legendary punk rockers Green Day opened Super Bowl LX and brought their high-energy performance and anthemic sound to the biggest stage in football on Sunday (Feb. 8) at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Green Day opened their high-energy set with an instrumental rendition of their 1997 hit, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” as past Super Bowl MVPs, including Tom Brady, Jalen Hurts, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, and more, made their way onto the field to celebrate six decades of the biggest night in football.

The group, composed of lead singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool, exploded into their performance with “Holiday” before going into “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” as fans sang and swayed along, many with massive Green Day memorabilia, Super Bowl flags, and more being held up high.

Their performance ended with the controversial hit, “American Idiot,” and the band then welcomed millions of fans to the Super Bowl.

“Welcome to The Bay, it’s Super Bowl 60!” Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shouted as their performance concluded.

According to several social media posts, Contra-ICE activists handed out black-and-white “ICE OUT” rally towels, branded with a bunny that resembled Green Day’s signature logo, at the entrance of Levi’s Stadium. The towels also included a QR code urging those who receive a towel to scan it. The code takes attendees to a website that says to hold up their towels with the “ICE Out” side showing during penalties.

Before Green Day’s performance, the group’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, shared his excitement for their performance during the Big Game Day.

“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” Armstrong, previously shared (per the Associated Press via NFL). “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”

“Celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day as a hometown band, while honoring the NFL legends who’ve helped define this sport, is an incredibly powerful way to kick off Super Bowl LX,” Tim Tubito, the league’s senior director of event and game presentation, added. “As we work alongside NBC Sports for this opening ceremony, we look forward to creating a collective celebration for fans in the stadium and around the world.”

Green Day’s performance came just minutes before Coco Jones performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Their performance served as part of the official kickoff to Super Bowl 60 and the pre-game entertainment lineup, which also included Charlie Puth, who performed The National Anthem (“The Star-Spangled Banner”), and Brandi Carlile, who delivered a powerful rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Additionally, Bad Bunny will deliver the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, which will be a production of the NFL put on in conjunction with Apple Music, Roc Nation, and Jay-Z.

Super Bowl LX took place on February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and featured the Seattle Seahawks facing off against the New England Patriots. The game aired on NBC and streamed on Peacock, with pregame coverage beginning at 1 p.m. EST.
