Megan Moroney made history as the first winner of Best Country at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) for her chart-topping single, “Am I Okay?.”

Just before the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards kicked off, the 27-year-old country star stopped to chat with Billboard on the red carpet, moments after winning her first Moon Person.

“That’s crazy. I mean, this is my first VMAs, and I had no expectations going in. So it’s a win and I get to perform later. Expectations are exceeded, we’re going to have a good night, and it’s just really cool to be here. My fans are the best. It’s a fan-voted award, so, it doesn’t surprise me that they voted their tails off,” Megan Moroney, a first-time nominee at the VMAs, told the outlet.

“Think I’m In Love With You” by Chris Stapleton, “I’m Gonna Love You” by Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood, “Liar” by Jelly Roll, “4X4XU” by Lainey Wilson and “Smile” by Morgan Wallen were also nominated in the Best Country category.

This year marks the first time the MTV Video Music Awards have included a country category, adding Best Country after four decades on air.

Moroney also chatted with the MTV VMAs producers before the show and shared how “happy” she is to represent country music at the show. “I’m just happy to be here. I think it’s amazing that there’s a country category now at the VMAs. This is my first VMAs, so I’m just happy to be here representing country music,” Moroney shared.

The Georgia native turned heads when she arrived to the VMAs red carpet, styled by Lindsay Dupuis, in a silver Sau Lee Zahara top, a white Lucie maxi skirt, and Christian Louboutin heels.

The star-studded show will also feature performances by Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Alex Warren, Jelly Roll, Sombr, J Balvin, DJ Snake, Post Malone, Doja Cat, Conan Gray, Tate McRae, Bailey Zimmerman, The Kid LAROI, Lola Young, and more.

Additionally, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, YUNGBLUD, and Nuno Bettencourt honor the late Ozzy Osbourne with a once-in-a-lifetime tribute performance, celebrating the legendary “Prince of Darkness” with a medley of his greatest hits.
