Lainey Wilson has been with her fiancé, Devlin “Duck” Hodges, since 2021, so the pair clearly knows a few things about how to prioritize a relationship. In a new interview with PEOPLE, Wilson spilled a few of their secrets, sharing that quality time is one of the most important things.

“You have to definitely carve out the time,” she said. “It has to be something that you’re very aware of, and you’re like, ‘Okay, I’ve got a day off here in 10 days. I’ve got to dedicate that day to spend time with my person.’

The singer added, “And we both need that and deserve that, and it’s always great. We just try to soak up those moments as best as we possibly can.”

As fans know, Wilson has had a very busy past few years, and she’s currently out on the road on her Whirlwind World Tour in support of her third studio album, Whirlwind. Due to her unconventional career, the Louisiana native told PEOPLE that her and Hodges’ relationship is “a lot different than a normal relationship.”

“We don’t get to see each other all the time, and I do live a lot of my life on the road, so we’re also kind of figuring it out as we go, which is fun,” she said, adding that it’s also been “easy” for her and Hodges to stay connected.

“He is one of the purest hearts and people that I have ever met,” Wilson gushed of her fiancé. “He is my biggest cheerleader. We don’t really play by the rules.”

Wilson and Hodges announced their engagement in February, and Wilson shared in a TikTok video in Nashville that she had a feeling she would be getting engaged on the day of Hodges’ proposal.

“So, I had talked myself into thinking he was going to do it that day. And then I called my sister, I said, ‘He’s going to propose to me today’ and she was like, ‘I gotta go,’” Wilson recalled. “And then I talked myself out of it because I thought, ‘Man I sure would be upset if I talked myself into this and that don’t happen.’”

As it turns out, she was right — Hodges took her to see the George Jones estate, which they had been wanting to do before Hodges planned a specific date to make the trip.

“And then as we [pulled] up, I realized that there were different plans,” she said. “So, he had it all set up. He had the candles and the picture frames, and it could not have been more perfect.”

Though the couple hasn’t gotten too far into wedding planning, Wilson doesn’t expect their nuptials to be an elaborate affair. “We really need to sit down and make that a priority,” she said. “But I’m sure that it’ll be something that’s just very, very simple, you know?”
