Kid Rock shocked fans with the announcement that he is working on a Gospel album.

Kid Rock Announces Gospel Album Produced By Rick Rubin

The 54-year-old Michigan native shared the surprising news of the forthcoming project during an interview with political commentator and comedian Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. When Maher asked, “Kid Rock, is it true that you’re planning to do a gospel album?” the controversial singer simply responded, “I am.”

The singer/songwriter, whose real name is Robert “Bob” James Richie, went on to explain that the gospel project is still in the early stage of production. “I’m doing one… I’m in the early beginnings now, doing a Gospel record with my old friend, Rick Rubin,” he stated. Rubin, a legendary producer known for his work with a variety of artists (Johnny Cash, Adele, The Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and more) across different genres, previously worked with Kid Rock in 2010 on his album, Born Free.

Maher Questioned His Decision To Release A Gospel Project

Maher then questioned Kid Rock’s decision to release a gospel project, considering the contrast of his previous releases that include party anthems and controversial tracks. “Oh wow, so a Gospel album? So, how does that fit in with some of the songs you did in the past like ‘I’m A Low Life.’ Like you wouldn’t sing that song in Church,” Maher questioned.

“I might… You know I know the Ten Commandments pretty well and in those Commandments I never once seen or even heard a thought of one being ‘Thou Shall Not Swear’,” Kid Rock said while laughing.

This announcement comes as a shock to fans as they are used to Kid Rock’s current discography that features songs such as “Bawitdaba,” “You Never Met A MotherF***er Quite Like Me,” “F**k Off,” “Balls In Your Mouth,” “Cucci Galore,” “Cocaine And Gin” and more.

Gearing Up To Hit The Road

Kid Rock is gearing up to hit the road this Spring on a seven-city Arena tour, with Chris Janson and Uncle Kracker serving as support on the trek.

The limited-run is set to kick off on Friday, March 21 at the Chi Health Center in Ohaha, Nebraska, and continue through April 19, where Kid Rock headlining tour will wrap up in Kansas City, Kansas at the T-Mobile Center. The tour will also visit several of Kid Rock’s “favorite American cities” such as Louisville, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Wichita and more.

Travis Tritt, Staind’s Aaron Lewis, Gavin Adcock, 3 Doors Down, Tracy Lawrence and more will also appear on select dates of the festival, which will take place throughout the United States in 10 small towns over 10 weekends.

Rock The Country Music Festival launches on April 4 in Livingston, Louisiana and will end on July 26 in Anderson, South Carolina. Kid Rock and Nickelback are also set to headline the Rock The South Festival, which takes place June 19-21 in Cullman, Alabama.
