Kelly Clarkson is seeking her independence amid her divorce from Brandon Blackstock.

According to TMZ, the singer/television host’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, filed legal documents on Friday (July 2), requesting that the courts officially grant Clarkson’s request for a divorce. The request reportedly asked the judge to put other ongoing issues, such as a financial settlements and child custody resolutions, to the side to be resolved at another time.

If her request is granted, Clarkson, 39, would be deemed legally single as divorce proceeds continue.

The news comes after TMZ reported that Blackstock challenged their prenuptial agreement with claims that the document is invalid. With million of dollars on the line, the judge has yet to make a decision regarding the prenup.

Clarkson was granted primary physical custody of their children, River, 7, and Remington, 5, in the divorce proceedings. The Texas native is trying to make the best of the co-parenting situation, however, admits it’s difficult.

“It’s tough. … I know with me and Brandon, it’s just a difficult thing because we’re in different places, and it’s like, we both agree on the main things, but it’s a hard thing when you’re not together all the time, for me personally,” she told Khloé Kardashian during a February episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. “As long as you make sure it’s about the children and their best interests, then we’re both on board.”

Clarkson filed for divorce from music manager Blackstock in June of 2020, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their separation. In September 2020, Starstuck Management, owned by Clarkson’s father-in-law Narvel Blackstock, sued Clarkson with claims that she owed the company more than $1 million in unpaid commission. She later filed a petition claimed that Brandon and Narvel defrauded her by charging larged sums of money while she was working with the management company. Brandon Blackstock denied Clarkson’s allegations.

Clarkson and Blackstock initially met in 2006 and later reconnected in 2012 at a Super Bowl party. They moved in together nine months after their first date and later got engaged. They wed in Tennessee in the fall of the following year.

This is Clarkson’s first marriage and Blackstock’s second.
