Kelly Clarkson fans have noticed that the “Chemistry” singer has been looking slimmer as of late, and Clarkson has now opened up about her weight loss transformation in a new interview with PEOPLE, where she revealed her diet and talked her new active lifestyle.

How Did Kelly Clarkson Lose Weight?

“I eat a healthy mix,” she revealed of her diet. “I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn’t. And 90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”

Along with her newly adopted eating habits, Clarkson credited her move to New York City and the active lifestyle that comes with living in the Big Apple as another factor in her weight loss.

“Walking in the city is quite the workout,” she said. “And I’m really into infrared saunas right now. And I just got a cold plunge because everybody wore me down.”

Clarkson Moved To New York City

Clarkson and her two children, daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7, who she shares with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, made the move to New York City last year along with Clarkson’s talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“I was very unhappy in L.A. and had been for several years. I needed a fresh start,” the American Idol winner explained of her decision to relocate her family and her show.

The Kelly Clarkson Show airs on NBC, and Clarkson said, “we told NBC, ‘I’m not trying to sound ungrateful, I just can’t stay here anymore for my mental health; for me and my kids.’ They weren’t doing well either. For the past few years, I’d just been showing up and smiling and doing what I’m supposed to do, but you can only compartmentalize so long until you break.”

Now Filming The Kelly Clarkson Show In The Big Apple

Season 5 of Clarkson’s talk show began in October and was the first season filmed in New York, and the singer revealed that she felt she could finally “be present” for the job after moving to New York City.

“I was going through a really rough few years, and even in the first season it was rough behind closed doors,” she explained. “Just to be able to come into season 5 feeling good and knowing my kids feel good—and the dust has settled. Season 5 is my first season to actually enjoy every minute of it.”

When she’s not working, Clarkson enjoys exploring the city with River and Remington. “We go walk the dogs a few times at the park,” she shared of some of the family’s favorite activities. “We’ll go for ice cream because my daughter will wear me down. We’ll go make slime, and we go to the museum.”

What Is The Singer’s Favorite Part Of New York?

The Texas native previously opened up about her life in the Big Apple while speaking to PEOPLE in November, revealing that one thing she loves about her new home is the way she is treated by fans.

“All celebrities should know this. When you live here, people do recognize you, but they just say, ‘Oh, hey, what’s up?’ And then they keep walking,” she said. “It’s incredible.”

Clarkson has also become a fan of the subway and named it her favorite method of transportation, though she also loves walking to and from work.

“I have literally never been bothered on the subway. Maybe just like, ‘Oh, hey, I like your music,’ but then they walk off,” she recalled. “That’s what I love about New Yorkers. Everybody’s got their own life. They’re like, ‘Yours is not more important than mine, so have a nice day.’”
