Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson recalled working together on “Don’t You Wanna Stay” duet!

The superstar pairing recalled working on their 2010 duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” a collaborative song that went double-Platinum and earned them a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight after announcing that Clarkson has recruited Aldean as her battle advisor on NBC’s The Voice.

During the interview with Entertainment Tonight, Clarkson revealed that her and Aldean never met before their duet, and when they hit the studio together marked their first time meeting.

“We never really met before we did the duet and we met in the studio,” Clarkson recalled. Before adding, “I remember I was so excited because I loved the song so much, but when you’re meeting someone and you love their voice and you love their sound… you’re not sure if it’s gonna mesh, you know? It doesn’t always work out.”

While Aldean was unsure who his duet partner for the track would be, as he had a list of suggestions written down, he immediately knew it was going to be Clarkson once he heard her start singing the now popular tune.

Aldean admitted, “I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to have her sing this here and do this here,’ and then she started singing and I just took my paper and threw it to the side, It was it was immediate though, as soon as she started singing… and the way she was singing with me, too, how it all blended, you could tell it was something special. It’s the cool thing, cause you never know what two artists are gonna kinda have that chemistry.”

Following the success of their chart-topping duet, Clarkson and Aldean have discussed the idea of collaborating on another track, but Clarkson admits that “Don’t You Wanna Stay” was such a big hit that the only way they could do another is if they could outdo their first collaboration.

“We have such a high bar for it,” The Voice coach explained. “‘Don’t You Wanna Stay’ was not only an amazing song for me personally, I loved it like from the beginning, hearing it, then I loved us on it… and then I think a lot of people, that was a big song for them, it was a big hit, and it’s one of those things where now every time I sing with you I’m like, ‘Unless it’s that and higher, I can’t do it.”

“That song was such a big moment for me in my career personally,” Aldean added. “We were kind of on the ascend at that point, like my career was really taking off at that time and I think that song really sorta opened me up to a different audience that really wasn’t just the country music audience… It was really like a major song in my career.”

The two superstars are the perfect pairing for The Voice battle rounds as their experience as duet partners is sort of what the members of Team Kelly will go through on The Voice during battle rounds, where two contestants who never sang together before are paired together to sing a song just like Aldean and Clarkson did in the studio with their “Don’t You Wanna Stay” duet.

“I thought it was cool because, literally, the Battles are two artists that have never sang together, that are coming together to do exactly what we did in the studio,” Clarkson explained. “I think that that’s really important to be able to blend with other artists, even if you’re a solo artist. We do duets all the time with other people.”
