Garth Brooks Removes Himself From CMA Entertainer Of The Year Category to Allow “Somebody Else To Hold That Award”

Garth Brooks has permanently removed himself from being nominated in the CMA Entertainer Of The Year category in a press conference on Wednesday (July 29) morning.

After the controversy of Brooks’ winning the CMA for Entertainer Of The Year at the 2019 CMA Awards. The win that prompted fans anger over their favorite artists who “deserved” the win over Brooks and also a win that Eric Church made comments about during one of his concerts.

Brooks’ explained to the media and fans, who watched from Brooks’ Facebook live, that he has been discussing the possibility of removing himself from the Entertainer Of The Year category permanently with the Country Music Association since the 2019 award show.

“You pretty much saw what happened after the CMAs, all the way through the new year. It got a little — it wasn’t fun, let’s put it that way,” Brooks admitted. “But there was one tweet that really stuck in my head,” talking about a Tweet that stuck with him prompting his decision to be removed from the category.

Brooks says he “100 percent agreed” with the tweet that that he should remove himself from the category.

He did let fans and media know that he is very appreciative and that the awards “mean the world” to him but says “the last thing I want to do is seem ungrateful, it’s time for somebody else to hold that award… ’cause they’re all out there busting their butts.”

“With all the love in the world, we are officially pulling ourselves out of Entertainer of the Year,” Brooks’ said.

The country superstar also elaborated that all seven of his EOTY award wins “mean the world to me … It’s just, with Entertainer, we’ve been lucky enough to carry that home a number of times, and feel like it’s somebody else’s turn.”

Brooks won CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1991, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2016, 2017 and 2019.
