Dolly Parton is “proud” of her Goddaughter Miley Cyrus for sharing “her story” with her new single “Flowers.”
The country music icon chatted with US Weekly on Tuesday (Jan. 17) to promote her new Duncan Hines baking collection. During the interview, the “9 to 5” singer was asked her thoughts about Cyrus’ new post-breakup anthem “Flowers.”
“Yes! I love that song,” Parton enthusiastically replied when asked if she has heard Cyrus’ new song. “Miley is so great. I mean, I just am so proud of her as a singer and songwriter.”
“I don’t know who wrote that, but I have a feeling she had plenty to do with it. It was her story if not her actual writing, but she’s a great songwriter and a great singer, but yeah, I think it’s a fantastic song,” Parton continued. “‘I can hold my own hand, I can buy my own flowers,’ you know what a great idea for a song, who needs you? You know?”
Miley Cyrus Released Her Post-Breakup Anthem “Flowers” Earlier This Month
Miley Cyrus released “Flowers” on Thursday (Jan. 12), which also happens to be the same day as her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday.
The tune, presumably about the demise of her and Hemsworth’s relationship, was co-written by Cyrus alongside Aldae and Michael Pollack. The track, produced by Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, brings the theme of overall independence and self-reliance while the lyrics speak on the topic of Cyrus finding her own happiness without a lover.
“I can buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours / Say things you don’t understand / I can take myself dancing / And I can hold my own hand / Yeah, I can love me better than you can,” Cyrus sings on the tune’s chorus.
Fans Think Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” Is About Her Ex-Husband Liam Hemsworth
Since the song’s release, fans have speculated that the song has several ties to Hemsworth, who Cyrus divorced in January of 2020. According to fans, the song seems to be a response to Bruno Mars’ song “When I Was Your Man,” which Hemsworth reportedly dedicated to Cyrus.
In the tune, Cyrus sings “built a home and watched it burn,” which fans think reference Cyrus and Hemsworth’s mansion in Malibu, which burned down in November of 2018 in a California wildfire, just one month before they got married.
At the time of the song’s release, Cyrus also shared a music video to accompany the tune, which showcases the chart-topping singer’s newfound confidence and being happy on her own.
The clip begins with Cyrus, donning a golden gown and sunglasses, walking across a bridge as lyrics of the tune detail the end of a breakup. As she realizes that she can live happy without a significant other Cyrus put her hair up and is all smiles. Cyrus then enters a backyard, wearing a black bikini, and dives into an in-ground swimming pool before working out, doing yoga, and taking a hot shower. The music video concludes with Cyrus freely dancing throughout her home in a black suit.
“Flowers” Is The Debut Single From Cyrus’ New Album Endless Summer Vacation
“Flowers” will appear as the lead and debut single on her forthcoming eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, which arrives on March 10, 2023. Endless Summer Vacation marks Cyrus’ first album on her label home, Columbia Records. The upcoming project will serve as her “love letter to LA” and a “reflection of the strength she’s found in focusing on both her physical and mental well-being.”
After nearly a decade, Cyrus parted ways with her former record label, RCA Records, where she released several albums such as 2012’s Bangerz, 2015’s Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, 2017’s Younger Now and 2020’s Plastic Hearts.
Endless Summer Vacation serves as the follow-up to her 2020 rock project, Plastic Hearts, which includes the hit singles “Midnight Sky,” “Prisoner,” “Angels Like You,” and more.
Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton rang in 2023 together on Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, Cyrus’ NBC special that featured performances from Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, Latto, Liily, FLETCHER, Rae Sremmurd, and SIA. During the show, Cyrus performed several duets with Parton and more.
Dolly Parton Is Currently Working On Her First-Ever Rock Album
Meanwhile, Dolly Parton recently released her Greatest Hits album, Diamonds & Rhinestones: The Greatest Hits Collection, and is currently working on her first-ever rock project, Rock Star.
Rock Star will feature duets alongside Miley Cyrus, CHER, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, P!nk, Brandi Carlile, and several other iconic singers. The project will feature original tunes such as “Rockin’” as well as covers of classic rock hits such as Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” Prince’s “Purple Rain,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird,” and more.
In the midst of working on her forthcoming rock album, Parton also wrote a new book. The children’s book, Dolly Parton’s Billy The Kid Makes It Big, was inspired by her God-dog, Billy The Kid. The Book is set to release on April 25, 2023.
Neither Parton nor Cyrus have tour dates on the books in the near future.
