Cody Johnson, 37, revealed that he and Lainey Wilson, 32, are planning to recreate an iconic country duet originally recorded by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn.
Cody Johnson Planning To Release Duet Of Iconic Country Hit With Lainey Wilson
While co-hosting Country Countdown USA alongside Lon Helton, the country superstar opened up about his desire to sing to collaborate with the “Country’s Cool Again” singer. “I’ve always wanted to do a song with Lainey Wilson,” Johnson admitted.
He then went on to detail that he wants to reimagine “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,” a song produced by Owen Bradley and written by Becki Bluefield and Jim Owen. “I heard Loretta Lynn’s ‘Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,’ I called Lainey and said we should record that song together,” he continued, before sharing that “she agreed” to reimagine the tune with him. “But we haven’t done it yet,” Johnson added.
The tune was first released in May of 1973 as the lead single from the album of the same name. “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” became the Twitty and Lynn’s third chart-topping hit on the Country charts, holding the top spot for one week and remaining on the chart for a total of 13 weeks.
The pair of country superstars often cross paths at award shows and festivals, and Johnson is friends with Wilson’s boyfriend Devlin “Duck” Hodges, so the duet will likely come to fruition in the near future.
“I’m going duck hunting with her boyfriend, Duck. I guess that’s how he got his name, because he’s really into hunting,” Johnson later added.
Open Up About His Current Single, “Dirt Cheap”
During Cody Johnson’s chat with Lon Helton, he also discussed his current single, “Dirt Cheap,” a song solely penned by award-winning Nashville songwriter Josh Phillips that was first pitched to Luke Combs before landing in the Texas native’s lap to record.
“He didn’t click on it. So here’s to you, Luke! He didn’t listen to it until I after released it,” Johnson explained. “He thought the title looked familiar. I talked about it afterwards, he had some choice words to say about ‘Dirt Cheap.’ I said, ‘Everything happens for a reason.’”
Additionally, Johnson talked about having country legend Red Steagall in the “Dirt Cheap” music video and how that he invited his to be the star of the Video Of The Year-worthy clip. “He’s been a friend of mine for ten years, and a great mentor. I called him, and said, ‘I want you to star in my video. You have to play an old man who doesn’t know what’s going on.’ He says, ‘That shouldn’t be too hard.’”
Cody Johnson is currently in the midst of his headlining trek, The Leather Tour, which comes in support of his latest album, Leather.
