Charlie Worsham has enlisted a handful of country music’s biggest names for his upcoming collaborative EP, Compadres, and one of them is Luke Combs. The two trade vocals on the uplifting and spiritually-driven track “How I Learned To Pray,” out now.
Written by Worsham with gifted songwriters, Jeremy Spillman and Ryan Tyndell, “How I Learned To Pray” begins with a melodic opening before Combs takes the first verse, which finds him reminiscing on the feelings of freedom when being a teenager and driving solo for the first time.
However, the story switches gears when he remembers getting into a car wreck, which ultimately led to him clasping his hands together in prayer.
“It wasn’t in a church, with a chapter and a verse / Some preacher made sure everybody heard / Or just some words somebody taught me to say,” the two artists sing the first chorus of “How I Learned To Pray,” joining in beautiful harmony before Worsham guides listeners into the second verse.
“I can fold my hands and bow my head / But there’s just some things that can’t be said / Without a little walk on water kind of faith / And that’s how I learned to pray,” they extend the second chorus before a brief instrumental break takes over.

Before officially releasing the track, “How I Learned To Pray,” resonated with followers online, particularly on the platform TikTok, which saw more than 14,000 people using the audio in the background of their posts.
Duet To Appear On Worsham’s EP, Compadres
“How I Learned To Pray” is one of five tracks belonging to Worsham’s forthcoming duets’ album, Compadres, due out on Friday, October 13. Along with Combs, the project, produced by The Cadillac Three frontman Jaren Johnston, includes guest vocals from Dierks Bentley, Elle King, Kip Moore, and Lainey Wilson.
“I’m so excited for the world to hear me sing ‘How I Learned To Pray’ alongside my buddy Luke Combs,” Worsham, who has also contributed his talents to projects from Eric Church to Wilson to Carrie Underwood to Keith Urban, and more, shared with excitement in a press release. “The whole idea behind Compadres is to celebrate the friendships I’ve made through music over the past decade.”
He continued, “I think fans will be able to hear how much fun we had making this project, and I think they’ll also hear how each of these songs tells a different part of my story. I’ve gotta give a shout-out to my Compadre-in-Chief, Jaren Johnston, for producing this project with me and pushing me to sing and play with more ferocity than ever before.”
“How I Learned To Pray,” as well as Worsham’s upcoming Compadres project will follow his 2021 EP, Sugarcane. Take a look at the music video for “How I Learned To Pray,” and listen to the track in the clip above.
