Bodie and his coach Blake Shelton paired together to perform a chart-topping Shelton hit during the season 22 finale of NBC’s The Voice on Tuesday (Dec. 13).

The Voice finalist and his coach took to the Universal Studios Hollywood stage to deliver an epic performance of “God’s Country.” Throughout the performance, Bodie played the electric guitar as Shelton strummed an acoustic guitar as they both belted out the lyrics to the country hit.

“I saw the light in the sunrise / Sittin’ back in a 40 on the muddy riverside / Gettin’ baptized in holy water and ‘shine / With the dogs runnin’ / Saved by the sound of the been found / Dixie whistled in the wind, that’ll get you Heaven bound / The Devil went down to Georgia but he didn’t stick around / This is God’s country,” Bodie and Shelton sang on the tune’s chorus.

Ahead of their performance, Shelton asked Bodie why he chose him as his coach and joked that he knows the real reason.

“One of the producers told me that you were the perfect blend of me and Gwen,” Shelton explained. “I get the Gwen thing, but Bodie was in serious demand during the blind auditions and you were considering going with Gwen, I mean she’s a hometown girl and she’s cool, but you ended up going with me right? I know why now because I’m so not cool that it makes you appear even that much cooler.”

“I think you’re the coolest,” Bodie replied.

Shelton then admitted to Bodie that he thinks “it’s so weird” that he chose “God’s Country” as he’s never performed a country tune on The Voice before.

“This is real. I picked this song. Before lives started I was driving… I just got my surfboard in the car at 6 AM listening to ‘God’s Country’ on repeat and I was like ‘I have to sing this on the show.’ The song slaps, your song slaps,” Bodie explained to Shelton.

“Nobody will ever want to hear me sing it again after they hear you sing it,” Shelton then joked.

“God’s Country” is the first single from Shelton’s compilation project, Fully Loaded: God’s Country, which was released on March, 29, 2019. The tune was co-written by HARDY, Devin Dawson and Jordan Schmidt.

The anthemic hit has gone on to win numerous awards, including Single of the Year at the 2019 CMA Awards, Single of the Year at the 2020 ACM Awards as well as earn Shelton his ninth GRAMMY nomination at the 2020 GRAMMY Awards for Best Country Solo Performance.

The season 22 finale of NBC’s The Voice aired on Tuesday evening (Dec. 13) at 9/8c on NBC and will air again tomorrow (Dec. 14) on Peacock.

The two-hour finale also featured performances from Kelly Clarkson, Maluma, OneRepublic, Adam Lambert, BRELAND and the season 21 winner of The Voice, Girl Named Tom.

The Voice coaches—Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Camila Cabello and John Legend—also took to the stage alongside The Voice finalists—Omar Jose Cardona, Brayden Lape, Bryce Leatherwood, Morgan Myles, and bodie.

In addition to performing alongside Team Blake finalists, Shelton also joined Kane Brown to deliver the live debut of their brand-new duet, “Different Man.”
