The 22-year-old South Carolina native auditioned for Season 20 of American Idol with Wallen’s chart-topping hit, “Whiskey Glasses” and frequently covers Wallen while busking on the streets in Louisiana and most recently in Downtown Nashville. While Maurice earned the praise of Idol judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan with his audition, he was eliminated from the competition following the duets round.
Despite not advancing further, Maurice told Music Mayhem that many people sent Wallen videos of him performing his songs and shared his reaction to getting to join him on stage.
“Morgan had multiple people in his personal life send him clips of me and my various performances of his music,” Maurice said of how he became acquainted with the “You Proof” singer. “He felt as if God was calling us together. Three individuals that don’t know each other all brought the same guy to his attention. That’s divine right there.”

Maurice continued to say that getting to sing on stage with Wallen after covering his songs felt “too good to be true.”
“Joining Morgan [on stage] felt like every decision I’ve ever made led to that moment. [It] felt like the biggest moment of my life. I felt like it was fake and too good to be true,” Maurice admitted. “The same guy who I’ve been making a living covering his songs the past few years is inviting me to sing with him. He’s the number 1 man in the world when it comes to music right now.”
“For Morgan to invite me to perform meant that he respected me and what I do and for that he will always have my respect,” He added.
In a video that introduced the performance between Maurice and Wallen, Wallen said that he had seen a TikTok video of the South Carolina native performing and then had one of his team members reach out to invite him to sing at the concert. “We wanted to shed some light on him and his story and we thought tonight would be a really good night to do that,” Wallen explained.
