An 8-year-old cancer survivor says he will cherish his memory for life after experiencing an unforgettable evening at a recent Luke Combs concert.

Cooper Massengill, a resident of Georgia, was diagnosed with Leukemia at the tender age of three. Now, at just eight years old, he has already undergone multiple surgeries. Through it all, Massengill has been able to overcome his cancer, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation learned about his dream of meeting Combs in person.

On Friday (July 21) night, that wish finally came true. Massengill got to attend Combs’ concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., as part of the powerhouse star’s 2023 World Tour. And it appears he got more than what he bargained for.

Not only did the child get to see his hero sing live, but Combs invited him to share the stage in front of thousands of fans. Together, the country superstar and the brave warrior channeled Combs’ cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman.

A video posted on Instagram shows the moment Combs is on stage with his lucky little fan.

“So, what we’re going to do, Cooper, is we’re going to sing the chorus of ‘Fast Car’ one time. And all of these beautiful people, who are so happy you’re cancer-free,” Combs begins over the microphone before pausing and making his own request. “Can I get a high five?”

After high-fiving the little man, Combs gets on his knee to match the height of his fan and leads Massengill into the chorus of the song. Moments later, Massengill steals the show, singing the lines of the song on his own and without any guidance.

“The energy was off the charts at @lukecombs in Boston last night, but this took it over the top 🥹,” the caption reads alongside the post.

“It Felt Great”

Recalling the moment with CBS News Boston, Massengill said, “When I was walking up, everyone was shouting my name. It felt great. Everybody doesn’t get a wish, and be grateful if you get a wish.”

The night wasn’t just special for Massengill, but it also proved an important moment for his parents, Travis Massengill and Melissa Massengill, who scored tickets to the concert.

“It was great to see him get the wish he wanted after going through everything,” Travis beamed before Melissa added, “I was just amazed they could organize all that for him. They really came through for him and made his wish come through.”

“Cooper’s wish was to meet Luke Combs. He had no idea that he was going to go on stage. His secret wish, within his wish, was to sing ‘Fast Car’ with him. And Luke Combs and his team made a lifetime memory for him,” Sean Holleran, the CEO of Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island, said.

“Fast Car”

Additionally, Luke Combs’ version of “Fast Car” appears on his current album Gettin’ Old. Since its release, the tune has been Certified-Platinum and marks Combs’ 16th No. 1 on country radio. Written and released by Chapman in 1988, the song, which earned her multiple Grammy Awards, belongs on her self-titled debut studio album.

Combs 2023 World Tour, which launched on March 25, runs through October 20, where it will wrap with back-to-back shows in London, England, at The O2 Arena.
