Yungblud recruited Oli Sykes of rock band Bring Me The Horizon for his emotionally-charged new single, “Happier.”

The pulsing track thrums with electronic elements and details a fear of feeling happiness amid a struggle with depression. Yungblud takes the first verse and chorus before Sykes sings the second verse and joins with Yungblud to finish out the honest track.

“If I could tell you how I feel / I know that you’re still hurting too,” the chorus reads. “No I’m not broken / I’m just scared to belong here / Scared to be happier.”

In a statement, Yungblud explained that throughout his life he has preferred to be in a darker place, which he admits has been detrimental in certain ways.

“I have almost been conditioned by myself my whole life to be in pain,” he said. “When I’m in pain I work better. I function better because I have something to combat. It’s dark but it’s all I’ve ever known.”

“The feeling of happiness is scary because you feel like it’s all about to go wrong,” the singer continued. “I have always felt that if I’m happy I’ll get complacent so it’s lost me a lot of opportunity for friendships and relationships in the past.”

“Really Emotional” Song To Write, According To Yungblud

Yungblud added that he got “really emotional” while writing “Happier.” “I was craving another Yungblud song that would burn in my stomach, make me feel like it’s all gonna be ok and encourage me to fight back against old habits and try my best to re-align myself to be better,” he said. “It’s ok to find happiness, it’s ok to feel it. I hope you find a little bit of it in this song. You deserve it. Everyone does.”

Yungblud and Sykes previously collaborated when Yungblud featured Bring Me The Horizon’s 2020 single “OBEY,” which went to No. 1 on the UK Rock & Metal chart. Later this month, Yungblud will join Bring Me The Horizon on their tour in Asia ahead of Yungblud’s headline tour in the region.

Follows “Lowlife”

“Happier” continues Yungblud’s new musical era, which he began over the summer with his songs “Lowlife” and “Hated.”

“Lowlife” marked a sonic and creative shift as Yungblud returned to his alternative roots while taking creative risks with quirky yet detailed production and considered instrumentation.

The song is an ironically upbeat track about staying at home, and Yungblud shared when it was released that he wrote the song “because I just didn’t want to leave my house. I was sick of people, of games, of myself, my friends, anytime I did anything some idiot had an opinion about it. What I should do or be.”

He continued, “The truth is I didn’t want to be anything at all sometimes, I wanted to be nothing. So I just didn’t leave bed. I was dissatisfied and craving some sort of boredom. The type of boredom where you sit in your house, in the same sheets and watch fucking mind-numbing TV, so I wrote a song about it.”

Yungblud’s Most Personal Song: “Hated”

Meanwhile, “Hated” is the most personal song Yungblud has shared with fans, detailing a conversation with his younger self as he attempts to understand the impact of alleged sexual abuse he experienced as a child and ultimately work through it,

“This is the most personal thing I’ve ever released,” Yungblud wrote on social media of the song. “That’s not to say it’s soft or gentle. Far from it. It’s a rallying cry and exposition of the soul.”
