Will Dempsey released his anthemic new single “Mississippi Mud” on Thursday (Feb. 11).

The self-penned, anthemic track was inspired by Dempsey’s recent trip to Nashville, Tennessee and finds the singer paying homeage to his hometown, on the banks of the Mississippi River, in a small town outside of New Orleans in South Louisiana, while also staying true to himself and following his dreams.

“The song started as a little guitar riff that I wrote sitting in my hotel room in Nashville and I finished the song a few days later after I got back home,” Dempsey shared. “I think it’s one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

“‘Mississippi Mud’ is about following your dreams, while staying true to who you are and where you come from,” the singer added. “I feel like so many people try to change themselves into something that they aren’t in order to fit in somewhere, or make it in a certain industry. And this song is about someone who isn’t willing to do that. It’s about being yourself and not apologizing for it. And while the song technically isn’t about me, I did use a lot of elements from my own life and upbringing on the banks of the Mississippi River in South Louisiana.”

The rock-infused, country tune puts Dempsey’s dreams of becoming a country superstar on full display while reminder listeners that he “he ain’t no cowboy” and he certainly doesn’t try to play the part, “he’s just a southern boy, who likes making noise and he sings straight from his heart.”

“I really don’t know what’s next for me. I’m just taking it one day at a time,” Dempsey explained of his future. “My plan is just to keep writing and recording songs and putting them out there as long as people want to hear them. This will only be my second single release, but I have a few more ready to be recorded. Once I get enough, I may try to put together an EP or an album. But I haven’t really thought that far ahead yet, I’m just happy to be able to make music that people actually want to listen to.”

“Mississippi Mud” follows his viral single “Best Parts Of Me,” which went on to amass millions of views and some notable recognition from Oprah Magazine, as well as celebrities including Mario Lopez, UFC President Dana White, Channing Tatum and more.

Dempsey previously went viral when he and his son Weston, were filmed playing guitar and singing along to their rendition of Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy,” which Dempsey’s wife Tiffany uploaded online. Soon after uploading the video, it quickly went on to go viral and amass thousands of views. The video now boasts at over 16.4 million views and counting. Following the viral success of the video, viewers fell in love with Dempsey’s vocals and begged him to release music of his own, which lead to his decision of releasing his debut single “Best Parts Of Me,” which is a song inspired by his 8-year-old daughter, Isabella.

Additionally, the singer also releases covers of hit songs daily on his YouTube channel and has released several covers that have gone on to become fan-favorites including Hootie & The Blowfish’s “Let Her Cry,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” and more.
