WATCH: Shania Twain Dons Eccentric Costumes & Colorful Wigs In ’80s-Inspired “Waking Up Dreaming” Music Video

Shania Twain fans can rejoice because the country music icon has officially released her brand-new single entitled “Waking Up Dreaming,” released Friday (Sept. 23) via her new label partner, Republic Nashville.

The track marks Twain’s first release in five years since 2017’s Now, which was her first album of 15 years. To celebrate her latest debut, the five-time Grammy winner and best-selling female artist in country music history also dropped the accompanying video for the single.

Waking Up Dreaming” finds Twain, 51, embracing her pop side. The high-energy track plays out like an all-out dance party, as the Canadian-born singer shares a motivational message to unapologetically be yourself and to live life to the fullest.

So let’s start waking up dreaming / And dress up crazy like superstars / There ain’t no shaking this feeling / Tonight we’re making our way to Mars / Way up higher than we’ve ever been / No we won’t stop at the ceiling / So let’s keep waking up dreaming,” Twain sings throughout the chorus, commanding listeners to seize the day.

As for the music video, Twain throws it back to the 80s era of hair bands and glam punk.

Directed by Isaac Rentz, she can be seen playing dress-up, sporting several eccentric costumes and colorful wigs. Viewers catch Twain donning bold looks like sequined fuchsia-colored pants and belle-sleeved tops paired with block-heeled shoes and head-to-toe jewelry. She also flaunts a few different pairs of lengthy eyelashes for good measure while spending time with some of her musician gal pals.

Before releasing her song and video, Twain, who recently won the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award at ACM Honors in Nashville, teased the track on Instagram with a photo featuring the cover art for the single. In the shot, she poses in a cream-colored cowboy hat and technicolored cowgirl boots.

“Every time I get to announce something like this, I get such a rush of adrenaline and nerves. It never gets old…I am super excited to share with you that my new song ‘Waking Up Dreaming’ is coming out this Friday,” Twain captioned the post. “I’ve spent the last couple of years working away on the new music… on my documentary… on the Vegas residency and it’s been such a creatively fulfilling time for me. I can’t wait for this next chapter and ‘Waking Up Dreaming’ is just the start.”

Twain later shared a snippet from the music video on Instagram, writing, “Waking Up Dreaming is out now!! As with all my music, take it and make it your own.”

Twain’s new label switch and music signals a new era for the superstar after being housed under Mercury Records/ UMG Nashville since the beginning of her recording career in the early ‘90s. She is the first artist to sign on with Republic Nashville.

“I couldn’t think of a better partner than Republic Nashville,” Twain said in a press release. “I’m honored and excited to be the label’s first artist and lead the charge of this new and exciting chapter. In this respect, it feels like a new beginning all around, and I’m embracing it wholeheartedly.”

“Shania is one of the most influential and impactful artists of this generation,” Republic co-founder and CEO Monte Lipman said. “She’s a rare talent whose legacy continues to resonate throughout the world. We feel a tremendous amount of gratitude to support her new body of work, which is spectacular.”

“Waking Up Dreaming” arrives on the heels of Twain’s blockbuster career-spanning documentary, Not Just A Girl, streaming on Netflix now.

The song is also the first taste of what listeners can expect from Twain’s upcoming album, expected to drop sometime in 2023.
