Keith Urban gave Music City a special treat that hit close to home on Friday night (Oct. 7) during his Speed of Now tour stop at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
After nearly three decades in the country music industry, the 20-time number-one hit-maker can fill any arena and amphitheater he wants. However, Urban remembers the hard work and long hours of singing in clubs and bars and wanted to honor those who do the same.
“I started playing in the clubs when I was about 15 years old, four hours a night, five nights a week,” Urban told the crowd, “all the way up until the late ‘90s when I was still playing the clubs … so tonight we are going to be highlighting the journey from places like that to those who play Nissan Stadium.”
Urban dedicated the night to the musicians on Broadway, and surprised the audience by inviting an aspiring country singer on stage.
“The first thing I wanted to do tonight is something different. I wanted to find somebody who’s playing in a cover band anywhere on Lower Broad, and bring them here to do a song,” Urban said to the crowd. “There’s a girl who I heard singing, and she actually plays in a band that is down at The Stage, on a regular basis, putting in her hours, night after night, week after week. I thought she had an amazing voice and I just wanted to bring her out to sing for you. So this is Kayley Green!”
The South Carolina native sang a powerful rendition of the Martina McBride hit “Independence Day” as Urban played the guitar.
Green was in shock by the invitation, “I know people [who] have played on the road for years and never played Bridgestone. That’s crazy. That’s nuts. It’s the biggest call of my life.”
Green also stepped in to sing Miranda Lambert’s part of “We Were Us,” the 2013 collaboration between Urban/Lambert.
The rising country singer has since gained attention from the media and has been featured on numerous media outlets.
The next day she took to Instagram to thank Urban for the life-changing night.
“By far the coolest experience of my life. Thank you so much @keithurban.”
Urban also shared the upcoming artist’s performance on his socials, exposing her to his 2.6 million followers.
“There was a running theme for our show in Nashville: BROADWAY TO THE BIG TIME. Our special guests for the evening highlighted that journey, representing those playing on Lower Broadway right now, night after night, to those headlining Nissan Stadium.
This girl has been putting in the hours with her band at The Stage every Friday night. Once you hear @kayleygreen sing you won’t forget her!!!”
Urban is continuing his Speed of Now tour throughout the rest of the year, with opening acts Tyler Hubbard and Ingrid Andress. Ticket information and tour dates can be found on his website www.keithurban.com.
