We Came As Romans’ have returned to the studio for a writing session for their sixth studio album, this will mark the bands first new music and writing session since the passing of their late vocalist, Kyle Pavone, who passed away due to an accidental overdose back in the summer of 2018.

We Came As Romans’ scream vocalist, Dave Stephens discussed with Billboard recently about the bands future, and told them that they’ve “been throwing a few demos around.” Stephens continued to tell Billboard, “I love that we’re going into the studio with so much to write about and something that hits home for all of us so hard. We’ve never had something so terrible happen, and I think it’s going to be therapeutic to write about it and be together and go through the whole process. I’m actually really looking forward to it. Every record we make some kind of progression, so there’ll be a progression on this one, but I don’t think we’re going to do anything too drastic. It’s still gonna sound like We Came As Romans.”

Although Pavone is has passed away and this will be the bands first new music without him, the band hopes to use some of Pavone’s final writing contributions will make this new record. Stephens’ continuing to tell Billboard that Pavone “was always writing, and I’m pretty sure he gave Lou, our guitarist, a few different things he wrote. We’re gonna try and get into his laptop, too, ’cause I’m sure he had just files and files and files of stuff there, too. So that’s a goal. We would love to include him in this record as much as we can, aside from just writing about him.”

The band is also holding to their promise to not replace Pavone with Stephens telling Billboard that, “There’s just no one who could replace him, I feel like if we added another singer it would feel like replacing him, whereas if it’s just me then I’m just covering his parts. It wouldn’t tear at our fan base or our hearts as much as seeing someone else up there singing those words and these songs.”

We Came As Romans’ vocalist Dave Stephens told the sold out crowd, “Kyle’s favorite thing about music was how it brought people together, Kyle’s life was so short, but this just shows how many people he reached and influenced. These songs meant the world to Kyle. This was his favorite place to be. He’d probably hate that we were all crying, but he wouldn’t hate this many people being in this room… and he wouldn’t have hated all his best friends being here and singing songs.”

The remaining members of We Came As Romans, who have been touring on as they know it’s what Pavone would have wanted them to do, wore black Promise Me shirts as they performed an 18-song set with special guests. Among the guests were, fellow Detroit rockers I Prevail, who covered WCAR’s “Wasted Age;” Memphis May Fire’s Matty Mullins, who sang “Lost in the Moment;” Iowa metalcore group For Today, reuniting for the first time in two years to play “Tear It Down;” Jess Ess on “Mis/Understood,” Joe Buras of Born of Osiris for “Regenerate;” Crown The Empire’s Andrew Velasquez on “Fade Away;” Set It Off’s Cody Carson for “World;” and Hollywood Undead’s Danny Murillo on “Cold Like War.” Original We Came As Romans’ drummer Eric Choi returned to the stage with the band for a rendition of “To Plant a Seed,” whilst I Prevail’s Gabe Helguera and Cold Like War album co-producer Nick Sampson joined the band for “Encoder.” August Burns Red frontman Jake Luhrs joined the band for a explosive performance of “Taking Back Roots.”

Tonight was for you buddy @kylepavone ❤

A post shared by Zach Myers (@zmyersofficial) on

We first hung out while our bands were on different tours in the same city, so your whole band came to our show and we partied until morning. Whenever we were home at the same time, I would come to Detroit just to hang. One of my few band friends I would go out of my way to see off tour. You brought me into your circle when mine was dwindling, introduced me to people I still call friends. You took me to my first and only Red Wings game knowing full well I didn’t really care who won, but I loved it anyway; just like you would talk my ear off about every team and player and coach like I knew what the hell you were saying, but I let you because your passion for sports was so amazing to see. We barely had anything in common other than the fact we were in bands, but we still somehow stayed up countless nights talking until the sun came up. You introduced me to your brother, Conner, my best man, business partner, and now lifelong friend and brother. I don’t listen to electronic music or dance, but that didn’t stop me and Conner from KILLING the dancefloor whenever you would DJ. I will never be able to repay you for all of the goodness you brought into my life, and I could write a novel about all of our good times. I will cherish every moment we shared. I will miss you dearly. I love you, Kyle.

Hey, We Came As Romans you guys have been slaying out on the road in 2016, You are actually currently out on the Bands vs. Food tour with Memphis May Fire, Miss May I & For Today. How has this tour been going for you guys?

It’s going really really well. Better than expected actually. It seems every band on the package shares a lot of the fans that are coming out, so I think people are leaving the shows feeling like they got their money’s worth.

You released your latest album which is Self-Titled in late 2015 while you guys were out on the 2015 Vans Warped Tour. How have fans responded to this album this far being almost a year since its release?

We tried a lot of different things on that record and viewed it as a chance to show our listeners a different side of us, which has opened a lot of doors for us and presented new opportunities. However, with doing something outside of the ordinary, you’re always going to have the listener who doesn’t want a change in sound. From the opposing perspectives, we’ve learned a lot about what our listeners want to hear and we’re excited to make new music in the not so distant future.

WCAR put out their music video for “Memories” a few weeks back which is off your Self-Titled album as well. This song seems to have a strong meaning behind it. What is the meaning behind this song and music video?

We wrote it about the last moments you get to spend with loved ones whether it’s before you go on tour, go away to college, or move across the country, it’s important to make the most of the final hours together. We thought incorporating some of our Warped Tour memories was a great way to portray the message of the song, since the friendships you make on that tour are very strong and it’s a tour that makes it sad to say goodbye to the friends you made all summer.

What made you guys to use WE CAME AS ROMANS as your album title, rather then using a different album name?

It was the first record we’ve done where all six of us were very involved in the creative process. I think it showcased our different personalities well and brought us together in a different way. So why not name it after the band?

When you released your new self-titled album coming out. I read that you have recorded 40 tracks for the album but only ended up choosing 10 for the album. How did you come up with 40 songs and choose only 10. Was that difficult to decide?

Some songs, yes it was, and others we all agreed either weren’t good enough or just didn’t fit correctly. Once you decide on a direction for the record, it gets easier to choose which songs fit and which ones don’t.

Can fans expect any new music from WCAR coming soon in 2016? (if so, is there a time/date set for its release?)

There’s no set time for a release yet, but we did start writing.

You’re currently up for an Metal Hammer Award for Best Breakthrough Band. How does it feel to be nominated for this award? I have faith you guys are going to kickass and win this award.

It’s nice to be recognized for an award like this in the UK. We’ve been trying really hard to match our success in the US overseas in different countries and it’s nice to see we got the ball rolling over there.

Your cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘Trouble’ has over 7 million hits now, do you know if she’s heard it yet? Out of her entire song collection, Why did you guys choose “Trouble”?

I feel like she has, which is a really cool feeling! When we were choosing a song to cover, “Trouble”  seemed like the best option because it’s popular, the music video was easy to spoof, and musically, covering it fits our sound.

You guys are playing Rock’N Derby this month on May 21st, 2016 with some awesome bands like A Day To Remember, Halestorm, Anthrax, and All That Remains. What are you most looking forward to at Rock’N Derby and is there any bands you are looking forward to seeing?

I love playing festivals and getting to perform for new listeners. They’re always such big opportunities for our band. And I can’t wait to see A Day To Remember. They’re a great band and always put on an entertaining set.

What can fans expect from your set at Rock’N Derby?

We like to get the crowd moving! So be ready for that.

Anything else fans can expect from We Came As Romans in the near future? Also anything we haven’t chatted about that you wish to mention in this interview?

We’re going to start writing soon, so keep a lookout for new material!

Check out WCAR at the upcoming ROCK’N DERBY Festival on May 21st, 2016 in Albany, NY. Tickets are still available at rocknderby.com

HardDrive Live Tour 2015

First to take the stage of the night were rockers Failure Anthem from Greensboro, NC signed to Razor & Tie. When these guys took the stage they immediately got the crowd hyped up and energy levels began to rise. The Greensboro, NC quintet—JD [vocals], Ryan [bass, backup vocals], Kile [guitar], Zane [drums], and Wil [rhythm guitars] are impactful, invigorating, and their infectious anthems with hooks so robust that you will be singing them for days after their shows. Their sound very similar to Stone Sour with frontman Corey Taylor. Failure Anthem’s frontman JD even resembling Corey Taylor. Failure Anthem overall was an incredible beginning to the HardDrive Live Tour.

Next up was the Alternative Rock band, Devour The Day from Memphis, TN. The band consists of former Egypt Central members Joey “Chicago” Walser on guitar and Blake Allison on lead vocals as well as touring members Ronnie Farms on Drums and David Hoffman on guitar. Devour The Day would take the stage to a loud ovation, a ovation that would last their entire energy filled set. I must say that this is the most noise I’ve heard for a opener from start to finish in quite some time. Devour The Day would not disappoint those screaming fans as they would play a phenomenal opening set.

The Road Warriors signed to Razor & Tie is Metal band, All That Remains. Seeming to spend 365 days a year on touring, All That Remains are dedicated to bringing the best live show to audiences everywhere they go. Beginning their set with lights flashing ATR just as All That Remains bursted unto the stage. All That Remains knows what their fans want to see at a live show and they give them that and more. Their setlist of 13 songs, the most powerful and memorable moment was when they played their ballad, What If I Was Nothing? The fans swayed with the melody, hands in the air, lighters & iPhone Flashes lit and those who knew the lyrics sang their hearts, which was most of the crowd. All That Remains brings so much energy unto the stage, its mesmorising and very entertaining. Playing to the crowd, All That Remains featured tons of sing-along choruses, strong new material, and a stage presence that turned a lot of heads. It seems years on the road has made them one of the best live bands out there. Every member of All That Remains was incredibly active in moving around the stage and working to get closer to their fans. They sounded even more amazing live than they do recorded and were such a pleasure to watch. Everywhere I looked people were singing, jumping and head-banging. There was even a couple of small mosh pits going on, depending on the song. Frontman Philip Labonte put on a hell of a performance. His screams were as powerful as they have ever been and his vocals in lighter songs like “Hold On” and “What If I Was Nothing” were both crisp and clean. The rest of the band was tight and on time and hit every note while not missing a beat. Their tightness and pitch perfect harmonies were incredibly spot on and amazing to hear live. They had ended their set with fans favorites of, This Calling and Two Weeks.

This six piece metal-core band from Detroit, Michigan; We Came As Romans exploded unto the stage with their single, Regenerate off their newest Self Titled Album. As a whole band, they were very very energetic on stage. Both vocalists Dave Stephens and Kyle Pavone were interactive with the crowd and used every inch of the stage space to run around. Throughout their entire set, they had an amazing light set up giving a very unique light show matching their energy on stage. The constant battle between clean and unclean vocals that has made WCAR so successful creates interesting elements in their live show just as it does on their albums.  David Stephens, who does unclean vocals, His screams crawl around the low register and are throaty, with tons of depth and character.  Occasionally he brings his screams more into the full-voice range, but regardless where the scream was on the spectrum, he was spot on and shook the house. Balancing out Stephens’ screams was the other lead vocalist, Kyle Pavone, who sings clean vocals for the band.  On the albums, Pavone’s high register has a very pure sound that is a great complement to Stephens’ low and powerful screams.  Pavone put out incredible vocals as well making for a well mixed vocal set which is WCAR’s signature sound. This kept the show exciting, as the band almost directed your focus to the correct place depending on the part of the song.  Overall, the show had a very polished feel – everyone knew where they should be at all times, and to the audience it was really quite impressive.  Bottom line was that it was a very well put together, professional show that reflected how much time this young band has put in on the road. We Came As Romans just knew how to play the right amount of old and new songs making for every fan to have an incredible show.
