Charles Kelley just shared a emotional, unreleased new song called “As Far As You Could,” which serves as his “goodbye letter to alcohol” amid his sobriety journey.

Kelley, who is one part of the GRAMMY award-winning trio Lady A, took to social media on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 22) to share a 3 minute, 50 second work tape of a new song that was inspired by his path to becoming sober.

“This song is my goodbye letter to alcohol…” Kelley captioned the clip. “I wrote ‘As Far As You Could’ with my bandmate Dave and the talented Jimmy Robbins and this is the demo. This song was very therapeutic to write and I hope it can meet someone where they are.”

Co-written by Kelley alongside Dave Haywood and Jimmy Robbins, “As Far As You Could” finds Kelley detailing his struggles with alcohol addiction, how it impacted his life and those around him as well as his dependency on needing a drink to take the stage.

“It’s why I moved to Nashville / why I almost left / you made me feel alive / but you scared me half to death / thought I couldn’t hit that stage without you running through my veins / now I sing the songs I always have / but the meanings bound to change,” Kelley sings on the first verse of the tune.

“Cause you took me high / but you sure as hell brought me down / you said goodbye… But I’m gonna see you around / and to tell the truth / I thought I never would / but it’s time I finally put you down for good / cause you’ve taken me as far as you could,” Kelley sings on the chorus.

The lyrics of the tune then reference the impact that his addiction had on his wife, Cassie, as he vows to put down the bottle for good.

“Well you gave me the courage the night I met my wife / you help me make her laugh ‘til you helped me make her cry / you started out a friend / turned into something else / now I like who I am with you sittin’ on the shelf / cause you took me high / but you sure as hell brought me down / we said goodbye… But I’m gonna see you around / and to tell the truth / I thought I never would / but it’s time I finally put you down for good / cause you’ve taken me as far as you could…”

The tune concludes with Kelley conquering alcoholism.

“You’re a part of my story / good times I won’t forget / I can say I’m glad you’re gone / but can’t say I wish we never met / cause you took me high / but you sure as hell brought me down / You put up a good fight / but looks who’s standing now / oh to tell the truth I thought I never would /
But it’s time I finally put you down for good / Had to almost lose it all before I understood / that you’ve taken me as far you could…”

Lady A Were Forced To Cancel Their Headlining Tour In An Effort To Support Kelley’s Sobriety Journey

The song comes months after Lady A was forced to cancel their headlining tour Request Line Tour in an effort to support Kelley’s “journey to sobriety.”

“We have decided to postpone our Request Line Tour until next year,” the group previously shared in a statement collectively at the time. ”Being on the road with our fans is our greatest joy, so it was a hard but important decision to make.”

At the time, the “Summer State Of Mind” singers said that they would be taking this time to focus on their families as Kelley works to become sober.

⁣⁣“We are a band, but more importantly…we’re family,” Lady A shared. ”We’re proud to say that Charles has embarked on a journey to sobriety. So, right now in order to be the healthiest, strongest and most creative band we can be, Lady A will take the time with the support of our families and team of professionals to walk through this together.”

Charles Kelley Broke His Silence In August of 2022

In early August of 2022, Kelley broke his silence to graciously thank fans for their support and encouragement on his sobriety journey thus far.

“I want to thank everyone who has shown me so much support and encouragement so far on my journey of sobriety,” Kelley wrote. “Y’alls kind words have meant the world to me and really lifted me up over the past few weeks. I can’t wait to get back on the road with Lady A next year.”

At the time, Kelley admitted that he is thankful to be able to get to spend time focusing on his family and health.

“Getting on that stage and being able to see, hear and feel everything through a clearer lens is going to be a gift that I won’t take for granted. ⁣I’m grateful for this time to focus on my family and my health,” Kelley continued.

This isn’t the first time that Kelley has released music on his own. In February of 2016, Kelley released his debut solo album, The Driver, which features fan-favorite tunes such as “Leaving Nashville,” “The Driver,” “Lonely Girl,” and more.

Four-time ACM Award-winning trio Lady A took the stage at the 2022 ACM Awards for a moving performance of their newest single, “What A Song Can Do.”

The performance was in honor of St. Jude and ACM Lifting Lives, the philanthropic arm of the Academy of Country Music, which is dedicated to improving lives through the power of music.

“We’re on the big main stage, so we’ve got a lot of ground to cover in our performance, but we’re performing our brand-new single, ‘What A Song Can Do’ and it’s tying into ACM Lifting Lives and St. Jude,” Lady A’s Hillary Scott told Audacy’s Katie & Company ahead of their performance. ”So, you’ll hear a lot about what they’re doing and their philanthropic efforts. But, ACM Lifting Lives and St. Jude and learning about what they do there and ‘What A Song Can Do’ will come out of that.”

“So, it feels like a pretty appropriate message, because when we’re singing these songs it’s not about our songs, it’s about the other artists and the other songs that have become the soundtrack of our lives,” she went on to say. “That’s really what this is highlighting and how powerful those songs are.”

“What A Song Can Do” was written by Lady A’s Charles Kelley, Laura Veltz, Ryan Hurd, and Sam Ellis. The song appears on Lady A’s latest album, What A Song Can Do (Chapter One).

“We have been overfilled with gratitude after releasing this album and we don’t take it lightly that after eight albums our music still resonates with so many people,” Kelley recently shared. “This song is the summation of where our hearts are right now and how much music can really pull us through in times of need. We love writing songs about lost love and things like that, but I feel like our favorite material comes with a strong positive message.”

The 57th Academy of Country Music Awards aired on Monday, March 7, exclusively on Prime Video at 8/7c.

Co-hosted by global icon Dolly Parton with Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett, the two-hour show livestreamed without commercials and featured 20+ performances from some of country music’s hottest superstars and rising newcomers.

The performance lineup included Parker McCollum and Lainey Wilson, who were crowned this year’s New Male and New Female Artist of the Year, respectively as well as Barrett, Allen, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Kane Brown, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Walker Hayes, Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne, Thomas Rhett, Chris Stapleton, Chris Young, Lady A and Kelly Clarkson.

Luke Bryan), Brothers Osborne and Brittney Spencer (“These Boots Are Made for Walkin’”), Parmalee and Blanco Brown featuring Brooke Eden (“Just the Way”), Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde (“Never Wanted to Be That Girl”), and Chris Young featuring Mitchell Tenpenny (“At the End of a Bar”).

The 2022 ACM Awards presenters included Alan Ritchson (actor, Reacher), Derek Carr (quarterback, Las Vegas Raiders), Guy Torry (comedian, Phat Tuesdays), James Patterson (author, Run Rose Run), Jason Aldean, Kelsey Asbille (actor, Yellowstone), Luke Grimes (actor, Yellowstone), Mickey Guyton, and Tom Pelphrey (actor, Outer Range).

The ACM Awards made history as the first major awards show to livestream exclusively as it streamed live on Prime Video in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

The legal dispute between country trio Lady A, the group formerly known as Lady Antebellum, and blues singer Anita White, who performs as Lady A, has been settled.

According to court documents obtained by Billboard, Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and White filed a joint motion on Monday (Jan. 31) to dismiss all claims and counterclaims against each other permanently.

“The Band dismiss all claims in this action against White with prejudice,” the court document reads. ”White dismisses with prejudice all counterclaims against the Band in this action.”

Details surrounding the settlement were not revealed, including if money was exchanged or if either party must forfeit the use of the name Lady A. However, it was made known that each party shall cover their own legal costs, including all expenses and attorney’s fees.

The GRAMMY-winning country trio changed its name from Lady Antebellum to Lady A in the summer of 2020 due to the racial connotations of the term “antebellum.”

The group explained that the change was sparked by the “injustices, inequality and biases Black women and men have always faced and continue to face every day.” They went on to apologize for any “hurt this has caused” to anyone and promised to make a donation to the Equal Justice Initiative through their long-standing charitable organization Lady Aid.

Following the announcement, Anita “Lady A” White spoke with Rolling Stone about the trio’s name change, revealing that she was blindsided by the news.

“This is my life,” she said. “Lady A is my brand, I’ve used it for over 20 years, and I’m proud of what I’ve done…. They’re using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is just a moment in time…. It shouldn’t have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it.”

Several days later, Lady A and White met via Zoom for a conversation that, according to social media, seemed to go really well. According to Lady A’s statement, they even wrote a song together and hoped to collaborate in the future.

“We had [a] meeting today, and we’re looking forward to a beneficial outcome for both parties. We’re making progress,” the solo artist Lady A told Billboard via email on June 15.

The suit states that the trio and solo singer discussed peacefully coexisting and that the trio would “support White’s musical career” in the future.

After those conversations took place, the band’s legal team drafted an agreement, which White was reportedly not happy with.

“Their camp is trying to erase me…. Trust is important, and I no longer trust them,” the singer told Newsday.

In July of 2020, White reportedly demanded a $10 million payment from the band to allow them to continue to use their trademarked name Lady A. At this time, the trio filed a lawsuit against White. They were not seeking any monetary damages, however they said that they “simply wish that the parties continue to coexist.”

White later filed a countersuit against Scott, Kelley and Haywood, accusing them of trademark infringement and claiming that the name change had been “undertaken with willful disregard for Ms. White’s rights.”

“The effect of the name change on Ms. White’s ability to distinguish her music in the marketplace was overwhelming,” White said at the time. “Internet and social media searches for “Lady A,” which had readily returned results for her music, were now dominated by references to Lady Antebellum. Ms. White’s LADY A brand had been usurped and set on the path to erasure.”

GRAMMY Award-winning country superstar Kenny Rogers may have died in 2020, but his long-lasting legacy lives on within his timeless music. Tonight, during a 2-hour concert special, Lady A honored the late singer with a tribute performance.

During a star-studded, pre-taped concert event on Thursday (Sept. 23) dubbed Kenny Rogers: All In For The Gambler, Lady A put their soothing harmonies on full display with Rogers’ “She Believes In Me.”

Rogers and his wife Wanda watched in awe from the side of the stage, while the couple also sang along to the trio’s rendition of Rogers’ tune.

Written by Steve Gibb, “She Believes In Me” was released in April 1979 as the second single from Rogers’ album, The Gambler

Later in the show, Lady A’s Charles Kelley also performed “We’ve Got Tonight” alongside Idina Menzel.

Kenny Rogers: All In For The Gambler also featured tribute performances from Menzel, Lionel Richie, Little Big Town and Reba McEntire, who took the stage to perform some of Rogers’ greatest hits, such as “Lady,” “Through the Years,” “Lucille” and more.

Rogers’ longtime friend and duet partner, Dolly Parton, also appeared during the star-studded concert event to share some touching memories that she shared with the country icon before performing a series of songs in an emotional finale featuring Rogers himself.

Produced by Blackbird Presents, the two-hour, concert special was filmed in 2017 in honor of his retirement and honored the life and legacy of the late country music legend, who passed away in 2020. Rogers was 81 at the time of his death.

“Kenny Rogers’ enormous impact on country music was matched only by the love all the artists and fans showed Kenny on this incredible night,” said executive producers Keith Wortman and Ken Levitan. “We are so thrilled to share this special with his friends, family and fans all around the world, as he will remain forever in our hearts.”

Kenny Rogers: All In For The Gambler aired on Thursday, Sept. 23 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on CBS and was streamed live and on demand on Paramount+.
