Billy Joel surprised fans at a recent concert (Aug. 24) by performing with a special guest. Joel invited Olivia Rodrigo to sing his hit, “Uptown Girl.” The pair also blended their voices on Rodrigo’s song, “deja vu.”
“I’m going to bring up another young musician,” Joel said when introducing Rodrigo from his spot at his piano. “This is a very talented singer-songwriter. She’s a Grammy winner. She won a Billboard award. She’s got the American Music award. She’s got all kinds of awards. She’s very talented, and uh, I like her music and so do my kids. Please say hello to Olivia Rodrigo,” he continued.
Rodrigo entered the stage to roars from the crowd before looking at Joel and remarking, “Thank you so much for having me, Billy. I’m such a huge fan.”
The pair then teamed up on Rodrigo’s “deja vu,” which name-checks Joel and his song, “Uptown Girl” on the second verse.
When Rodrigo got to the lyric which referenced Joel, she pointed at the singer, who began to laugh while still seated behind the piano.
Following the conclusion of the song, Joel stood up from his piano bench and said they were going to sing “the song that was referred to in the last song.” Joel kicked off “Uptown Girl,” with Rodrigo joining in on the lyric, “she’s been living in her white bread world.”
The pair continued the song sharing a brief hug when they’d finished.
Rodrigo reacted to the experience, writing on her Instagram story, “I SANG WITH BILLY JOEL AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN TODAY ARE U KIDDING.” She also shared a snap of her and Joel backstage, calling the event “the biggest honor ever,” according to Audacy. “Still crying thank u Billy!!!!!!!,” she added.
In a subsequent post to her Instagram feed, Rodrigo shared a carousel post of memorable shots from the night, including a sign taped to her dressing room that read “Olivia, you were epic!!!”
Joel will return to Madison Square Garden on Sept. 9 and again in October, November, and December for his monthly residency. Meanwhile, Rodrigo wrapped her SOUR TOUR back in July.
