Luke Combs performed his pandemic-inspired song “Six Feet Apart” live from his garage during Wednesday (June 3) evening’s two-hour CMT Celebrates Our Heroes: An Artists of the Year Special.
“I know this a really interesting time that we’re living in, I want to send a huge thanks out to everybody who’s out on the frontline fighting this thing and to everybody else, I hope you’re staying home and staying safe.” Combs said ahead of his performance. “I miss you guys a lot out on the road and having people here when I sing is usually pretty nice, missing that a lot these days. Miss a lot of things and I just wanted to write a song about the way I feel and hopefully some of you guys can relate to this song.”
Combs first debuted the song during a live stream in mid-April, just one day after he co-wrote it with Brent Cobb and Rob Snyder. Due to the overwhelming response he received from fans, Combs later release a studio version of the song.

Lyrically, the song finds Combs detailing what he misses most about life before COVID-19.
“I miss my mom, I miss my dad/ I miss the road, I miss my band / Giving hugs and shaking hands / It’s a mystery I suppose / Just how long this thing goes / But there’ll be crowds and there’ll be shows / And there will be light after dark / Some day when we aren’t six feet apart,” he sings on the chorus.
CMT Celebrates Our Heroes: An Artists of the Year Special recognized COVID-19 heroes in the following categories: Healthcare, Education, Business, Community Leaders, Food Industry, Infrastructure, First Responders, US Military, and more. The TV special was executive produced by CMT’s Margaret Comeaux, Switched On Entertainment’s John Hamlin and Amy Lin Johnson; the Executives in Charge of Production are Jackie Barba and Heather D. Graffagnino.
The show also included appearances from Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Hunt, Tim McGraw, Thomas Rhett, Little Big Town Florida Georgia Line, Luke Combs, Jake Owen, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, Lee Brice, Reba McEntire, Zac Brown, Brandi Carlile, Brothers Osborne, Kane Brown and Lady Antebellum.
The star-studded event aired on CMT at 8 p.m. ET/PT with a three-network simulcast on Paramount Network, Pop TV and TV Land.
