The standout American Idol contestant shared “One Day Tonight,” a track co-written by Jared Griffin, Trannie Anderson, and Brett Sheroky and produced by Jimmy Robbins (Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Brett Young).
The song, destined to be a huge hit for the father of one, finds Thompson putting his signature southern vocals on full display over a pop/country instrumental.
“I fell in love with ‘One Day Tonight’ as soon as I heard it, just by the sound of the melody,” Thompson, who is currently in the Top 5 on Idol, shared. “The lyrics are beautiful, the song has so much meaning and it is also so catchy! Can’t believe I get to sing it, to be honest, it blows my mind. I hope so many people love it just like I did when I first heard it!”

Throughout the track, the country crooner sings about his girlfriend’s dreams of their future and what their life could be together one day while drinking red wine. The track also details his lover’s dreams of a fairy tale relationship while he hopes he can offer her that life one day.
“She wants a wedding in September / Save up all winter / Spend our summers in a fix ‘er upper in Denver / She wants a girl and a boy / And a old dog named Ole Roy Lord I hope this old boy can give her that life / So go on girl / Pour a glass of wine / And dream aloud, talk about / One day tonight,” Thompson sings on the track’s chorus.
Upon release, the song quickly charted on the iTunes Country Chart, debuting at No. 3, only sitting behind Morgan Wallen’s latest tracks “You Proof” and “Thought You Should Know.”
The 20-year-old Kentucky native quickly became one of America’s favorites after he auditioned with Kameron Marlowe’s “Giving You Up.” His audition even caught the attention of Marlowe, who reached out to him after seeing his impress performance of the popular country tune.
“You got a real-life, story-telling, badass voice,” Richie gushed at the time of Thompson’s audition. “It’s believable. I don’t know what you were expecting… I know you weren’t expecting that. That’s why I said it.”
Katy Perry once called Thompson “the American Dream,” while Luke Bryan later declared Thompson “might win the whole competition” after he praised the “magic quality” he has “going on in [his] voice.”
Thompson has also impressed the Idol judges and America with countrified renditions of pop hits such as Noah Cyrus’ “July,” Rihanna’s “Stay,” Harry Styles’ “Falling,” Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” John Mayer’s “Heartbreak Warfare,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Sundy Best’s “Painted Blue,” and “You’ve Got A Friend In Me,” a popular tune from Disney’s Toy Story.
The eight-time GRAMMY award winner and the Top 5 will be live from Underwood’s Las Vegas Residency at Resorts World Theater.
