Kelly Clarkson says that writing new music has been the best outlet at helping her get through her divorce.
During Thursday (Feb. 25) morning’s interview with Entertainment Tonight, the singer shared that she has been working on her new album and she says she is unsure how anybody goes through a tough time in their life without having an outlet like writing out their feelings in song.
“I have this record that we’re working on,” Clarkson revealed. “It’s really great and really honest, There’s just a lot of questions that I have to answer before releasing it for myself, you know? Whether that be business-wise or personally or whatever. Whatever happens though, it is such a gift. Like, I don’t know how anybody — I’ll just be real with you — goes through grief like divorce, any kind of grief, any kind of loss, without having an outlet like this.”
Clarkson continued to share that she has written about 60 new tracks and says regardless of whether people get to hear it or not, she has gotten through some of her darkest times by creating new music.
“I have written, like, 60 songs,” Clarkson shared. “It is an insane amount of getting it out. I think that’s a blessing in itself. Anytime you go through some life, it’s such an awesome thing to have that outlet, regardless of whether people hear it or not.”
The singer admits that although she loves writing personal songs, she struggles with how much of her personal life that she is “willing to put out there.”
“I hate that I had to go through the ‘Because of You’ or ‘Piece by Piece’ phase,” Clarkson explained. “Certain songs that I’ve written certainly have shaped me, but have been really hard. They’re just difficult decisions to put those out because they’re so personal.” She continued, “but the other side of it is like, ‘Man, how many people have come up to me?’ Saying things like, ‘You have no idea. I never wanted to talk about it. I never have told anyone this.’ Music has that way [of healing], even for me. I listen to other artists and music as a way of ‘healing you.'”
The Voice coach filed for divorce from her husband Brandon Blackstock, after nearly seven years of marriage, in a Los Angeles court on June 6, citing irreconcilable differences.
Clarkson will return to her big red chair on The Voice, this coming Monday, March 1 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
