Launching the evening was the shimmering indie pop all-female band, The Aces who got the crowd moving instantly with their song “Volcanic Love” which is off their debut full length album, When My Heart Felt Volcanic. Powering through their 8-song setlist which included songs like “Bad Love,” “Fake Nice,” “Strong Enough,” and “Stuck.” Although The Aces are a newer band, their performance was like if they were out for over 10 years filled with energy, fun, and talent.
Next, was headliners 5 Seconds Of Summer, who exploded onto the stage with their rockin’ song “Babylon,” which is a bonus-track off their latest record and their best album yet, Youngblood. During their 20-song, 90-minute set, it was clear that the band is more focused on the present and their future rather then their past as more than half of the show was songs from their third studio album, Youngblood, performing 11 out of the 13 songs off the album. Although, Youngblood was only released 3 months ago (in June), the live performance of the songs were so solid it was as if the band has been performing these songs for years and years.
Charging through two more Youngblood tracks, “Talk Fast” and “Moving Along, before bringing back one of the fan favorite hits “She’s Kinda Hot” which made for a massive sing-a-long but then again the sold out crowd was roaring the lyrics all night long no matter the song. 5SOS’s set was full of energy, talent, and a more matured image and more rock’n roll driven pop sound. The fans throughout the evening made the ground shake as fans jumped, danced, and screamed along with the lyrics to the songs at the top of their lungs making for a roaring applause at the end of each song.
The band also performed their double-platinum hit, “Amnesia,” acoustically during which a fan driven project was held up during the song, which was a colorful sea of rainbow hearts which were made up of colorful hearts made from paper being placed in front of fans cellphones lighting up the entire sold out amphitheater. Ending out their interactive, energy driven set with “Want You Back,” “She’s So Perfect,” and of course the albums title track “Youngblood.”
Other notable highlights of 5SOS’s set include their performance of their catchy, slow song “Lie To Me,” the massive sing-a-long dance party to their single “Valentine” in which fans help announce the music video with a recorded video as heart and lip shaped balloons crowd surfed throughout the crowd. Another notable mentioned would be the roaring ovation fans gave the band upon their exit from the stage. If you get a chance to catch 5SOS, definitely do!
